Extracts from cannabis plants are called cannabis oils. They have the same 100 or so active ingredients as the plants when they are unprocessed, but the balance of the compounds depends on which plants the oil comes from. Cannabidiol, or CBD, and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, are the two primary active substances found in cannabis plants. A lot of CBD can be found in oil extracted from hemp plants, while a lot more THC can be found in oil extracted from skunk plants. THC is responsible for the high that recreational cannabis users seek, whereas CBD is predominant in medical cannabis oils.

Other forms of cannabis that are solid and typically come in the form of resin or dried plant material are sold as such. The concentrations of CBD and THC in commercially produced medical cannabis oils are typically tightly controlled, making dosage calculations simple.

CBD and other plant compounds, such as THC and cannabidivarin, may also be anticonvulsants. Both Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, two severe forms of childhood epilepsy, are well-supported by clinical trials conducted in the United States and Europe. Existing medications for epilepsy frequently fail to improve either type. Although some trials have reported side effects such as dry mouth, lightheadedness, and altered liver enzyme activity, CBD is generally regarded as safe.

In Europe, there are currently four drugs containing cannabis compounds on the market. Sativex, an oil that contains equal parts THC and CBD, is used to treat muscle spasms in multiple sclerosis, and Nabilone, a synthetic compound that mimics THC, is prescribed for chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting. Both have too much THC for children to consume. David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College, London, stated, “The only medicines that are approved in the UK would get children stoned.”

In the United Kingdom, cannabis oil can only be sold legally if it contains less than 0.05% THC. However, the nation’s medicines regulator, the MHRA, recently made the announcement that even pure CBD could not be sold as a medicine without first passing the usual clinical testing and safety checks that all new medicines must go through. Epidiolex, a CBD-based medication from GW Pharmaceuticals, will be considered for approval by the US Food and Drug Administration this month after completing such clinical trials. The drug will receive a ruling from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) early next year. Despite Brexit, Epidiolex may be available for prescription to named patients in Britain next year if the EMA grants its approval.
